What is an allergy?

Allergy: A misguided reaction to foreign substances by the immune system.
Allergies are the most common immune disorder. They occur when the immune system overreacts to an allergen (dust, pollen, milk, dog or cat dander, strawberries, etc.) and produces too many neutralizing chemicals (especially histamines) to counteract it.
Your immune system keeps you an 100% natural, organic, and unadulterated you! It recognizes and destroys anything not supposed to be in you such as: foreign bacteria, viruses, pollutants, dust, pollen, drugs, tumors, etc. Normally, this immune system response protects us from dangerous diseases. In a person with allergies or asthma, the immune system reacts to harmless substances such as plant pollen or animal dander and creates allergy (stuffy nose, watery eyes, etc.) or asthma (wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath) symptoms.
From a traditional medicine standpoint, runny eyes, irritation, redness, fullness in the sinuses and other allergy symptoms are caused by histamines; therefore antihistamines are often prescribed to dry mucus membranes. However, antihistamines may cause serious heart problems and caution should be used with alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers.
People suffering with allergies are often treated through chiropractic care. Researchers have found that the immune and respiratory systems depend on normal communication from the brain and spinal cord to control and coordinate their functions properly. Chiropractors locate and correct vertebral subluxations (vertebrae misalignments that can interfere with normal nerve function) in the attempt to improve the function of your nervous system. Freed of nervous system stress, your immune system will work more effectively to neutralize the allergens in your environment.
Naturopathic and homeopathic remedies may be helpful for both the symptoms and prevention of allergies. These remedies are a safe and natural alternative to allopathic medicine. It is important to begin homeopathic prevention as early as possible in the allergy season
